Storylines

1993–96

Laurie arrived in early 1993 when he investigated the disappearance of Tom Neilson (Adrian Keeling) from his inner city home. He grew close to Tom's wife Marj (Elizabeth McRae) and the two started to date. However Tom showed up and Marj's son Darryl (Mark Ferguson) scared Laurie off. Tom died and Marj broke it off with Laurie after she feared she would lose her money dating Laurie because of Tom's will. Nick Harrison (Karl Burnett) realized Marj was lonely and helped get the two back together at New Years Eve. In 1994 Laurie nearly killed Marj by exposing her to chemicals and the resulting worry pushed Laurie to propose to Marj, they married in a ceremony combining both Catholic and Jewish traditions. Laurie's daughter Ruth (Joanna Briant) opposed of the marriage but was won over by Marj.

In 1995 Marj and Laurie fostered a daughter, Lulu (Meighan Desmond) after she was abused by her father. When Darryl died, Laurie was the only one to counsel Marj after Stuart (Martin Henderson) fled town. In December a truck crashed through the hospital, Laurie helped the survivors but suffered a huge heart attack and narrowly scraped death. In 1996 Laurie departed with Marj to move closer to her job in Wellington.

Reception

Laurie made a lasting impression with his and Marj's fostering of Lulu, expanding the Neilson family unit.[2][3]
